Few people have perfect credit. Once your credit rating goes down it can be difficult to raise it again. Yet most everything you want to do requires a
credit report check including major purchases and even a
home mortgage. There are some ways to help keep your credit in check and even improve your credit score. Take some simple steps to help resolve any problems to keep your score as high as possible.
You may be denied credit due to a bad credit report. The first step to take in trying to improve your credit is to check your credit report. There are three credit reporting agencies so be sure to get reports from all three since they each may have slightly different information. Once you have your reports in hand check to see what areas are bringing your credit score down. The most obvious place to look is in late payments. Whenever you make a late payment on a credit card, loan or utility payment this information is reported to the agencies.
If you have a home mortgage being late on these monthly payments can wreak havoc on your score and may preclude you from getting future credit. Always check to make sure of the accuracy of the report. There may be an older account that is showing unpaid but it may be incorrect. If this is the case it can be easily corrected by filing a dispute. The company will review the claim with the reporting creditor to resolve the situation. If it is found to be inaccurate it will be removed from your credit report instantly raising your credit score.
Reviewing your credit report can also quickly find any problems such as identity theft. If anyone else has used your personal information to obtain a credit card or loan you will be able to spot it immediately and can take action. If you do find theft immediately call the credit company who issued the credit to stop any further charges. Explain the situation and get the authorities involved. They can often locate the offender and press charges.
The best way to improve your credit report is to pay your bills on time. Review all of your outstanding bills and determine how much you can pay on each one per month. Call your
credit card companies to make payment arrangements on delinquent accounts. Often they will settle for less than the full amount in order to resolve the issue and get paid. Pay more than the lowest minimum payment on charge cards in order to get them paid off sooner.
